to helmet or not to helmet….

I checked out this website as advised  http://www.cyclehelmets.org/ and I read this research http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/articlerender.fcgi?tool=pubmed&pubmedid=16565131.

Interesting and statistical.  I understand what is said, I understand that proper scientific methods, probabilities and evaluating the norm are in full evidence and for that I appreciate the due diligence that these authors and scientists have taken.

My perspective is not from the realm of science it is from the heart of a mother. A mother who had a mother like me. One who did what she was supposed to do to make sure her children are healthy and productive and to make sure they make it to adulthood with a minimum amount of broken limbs and in this case a minimum amount of head trauma and skinned legs. I would rather err on the side of the possibility that the helmet may save their lives than to be forced to live in sheer agony with the possibility that it could have saved their lives. We are stewards of our children. We make all the decisions, pay all the bills, perform all manner of doctor duties and discipline and bring the love. According to The Bike Doctor Shakespeare’s famous words To be or Not to be –or to helmet or not to helmet.

Bicycle Helmets x3

My children are now wearing bicycle helmets.  We figured out a very simple way of locking the helmet to the bike.  I am proud of myself and of them.

Love Made of Heart

http://lovemadeofheart.com/blog/august-is-happiness-happens-month/

She wrote about me, I write about her. Teresa LeYung Ryan a sister-friend, mentor, author, writing career coach, publisher and an inspirational woman on a mission. http://www.lovemadeofheart.com/

GraceArt Publishing is the publisher of Build My Writer’s Name, Beat the Game:  How to Create a Platform and Attract Agents, Acquisition Editors, Publishers, Readers, and Media Attention (the 22 minutes for 22 days workbook)

All I can say is that if you need motivation, if you need branding help, if you need someone to push you into your own idea of who you are – that would be Teresa.  She has been my guide and my friend for 15 years and I attribute the ability to step out on faith as it applies to writing to her. She pushed me into WordPress and into Red Room http://www.redroom.com/member/yolandebarial

and into going to panel discussions, book signings and poetry readings. She introduced me to those that I needed to know when I decided to produce my own poetry readings at Kimball’s Carnival and then at Magic Johnson’s Starbucks in Oakland. I love her and I know you will too.  She is creating in my mind’s eye the vision that is retiring at 55.  Thanks T!

My Sunday Morning Word

I woke up Saturday morning feeling sensual. I enjoyed the feeling of myself and the anticipation of one day being expressive in that way again – SOON! The kids and I spent the day doing chores and finalizing the day at a soccer game in Livermore that was one of the best games the team has played all season.  Parents on the opposing team sat on the same side as we did and we bonded. We laughed, we clapped, we screamed, we turned over lawn chairs, we stood up, some ran down the sidelines, some jumped up and shouted. We were the assistant coaches to the coach and we were our children’s best and worst friends all wrapped up into one long line of colored lawn and folding chairs, tents, umbrella’s, coolers, blankets and water bottles. The boys kicked, booted, slipped, tripped, fell, cried, laughed, high-fived and scored and like the baby penguin they knew their momma’s and poppa’s high pitched drill sergeant coaching voice – able to distinguish one you go babee from another you go babee. The score was 4 to 7 and our boys lost – however it was a hard fought battle and at the end many mothers had lost their ability to speak above a whisper!! WooooHaaaa!! Oh and might I add the boys were on fire, they were jazzed, they were hyped and they were proud of themselves. They were a team!!!!  Finally.

As all of this excitement was going on, the sun was out and I was still sensual.  It was a good feeling. I wanted to share it.

I wanted to go out on a date with someone who I knew, knew what to do and yet I know I didn’t need to get it done. He never showed up. I was happy. Because I knew.  I showered. I read and relaxed. Thank you Jesus.

The one who knew what to do, texted me in the morning, apologizing because he fell asleep.  He wanted to go out on the date today.  When I went to church later on in the morning, the pastor spoke about the scripture that says your body is a temple, it is not yours it is the Lord’s. 1 Corinthians 6:19, 20.

That was my Sunday morning word. That is what I needed to hear and it was confirmation that God has my back and my body.

Bicycle Helmet Locks

Ok, so there are locks for bicycle helmets and believe it or not I had no clue.  The last day or two I have talked to many parents like myself who had never heard of bicycle locks for helmets. Helmets that are mandated by law for all children under 18 to wear need to be able to be locked and secured when these children ride their bikes to go to the store, to school, or to play some basketball.

This is what Oprah calls a teachable moment.  Learning is a daily process and as we grow our minds should continue to want to soak up knowledge and learn something new or a different way to do something old.  I have learned that bicycle helmets can be locked. And I have learned that I am not the only parent who has no clue about the locks and about the fact that even the best of us slip up. What I mean by this is that I know that everyone should wear helmets and I am sure you know that also; however in a time when the law doesn’t get enforced, the penalty for not wearing a helmet is not enforced, police officers have way too many serious crimes to bother about a preventative one however it is necessary.  I pledge to my children and to yours to make sure that as parents we do what is best for our children.
